Class 4 Chemical Indicator Sterilization Pouches: What They Are and Why the Class Matters
Share
Not all sterilization pouches are created equal, and the difference isn't cosmetic — it's the chemical indicator printed on them. If you're ordering pouches for your practice, understanding what "Class 4" actually means is the difference between a pouch that gives you real information and one that just tells you the packet got warm.

What the indicator classes mean
Chemical indicators are grouped into classes (1 through 6) based on how many sterilization parameters they respond to:
- Class 1 indicators simply show a load was exposed to the sterilization process — used on the outside of packs, not a reliability measure.
- Class 4 (multi-parameter) indicators react to two or more critical sterilization parameters — typically time and temperature — giving you meaningfully more confidence than a single-parameter indicator.
- Class 5 and 6 go further still, closely mimicking biological indicator performance, but at a higher cost per pouch.
For routine daily sterilization pouches, Class 4 dual-indicator pouches are the standard most practices land on: meaningfully more informative than basic single-parameter pouches, without the cost premium of Class 5/6 for every single load.
Why the dual indicator matters
A Class 4 sterilization pouch typically shows two indicator marks — one on the outside of the pouch, one on the inside. The outside mark confirms the pack was exposed to the sterilization process at all (useful at a glance when unloading an autoclave). The inside mark confirms the parameters actually reached the instrument itself, not just the outer wrapping — which is the number that actually matters if you're ever asked to justify a sterilization outcome.
What this looks like in your daily workflow
Every pouch you seal and run through a cycle should show a clear, unambiguous colour change on both indicators when you unload it. If you're only checking the external indicator, you're missing half of what a Class 4 pouch is designed to tell you — the internal indicator is the one worth training your team to actually look at before instruments go back into circulation.
Sourcing considerations
Not every "sterilization pouch" on the market is clearly labeled with its indicator class, and pricing can vary significantly for what looks like the same product. When sourcing pouches, confirm:
- The indicator class is explicitly stated (not just "chemical indicator included")
- Compatible sizing for your specific autoclave and instrument sets
- Health Canada registration status for the pouch and indicator combination
Where to source Class 4 pouches
We carry self-sealing Class 4 dual-indicator sterilization pouches sized for standard dental instrument sets, with documentation available for your compliance records. If you're not sure whether your current pouches are actually Class 4 or something lower, send us a photo of what you're using and we'll confirm.
