Understanding Sterilization Monitoring: Why Biological Indicators Matter

For dental clinics across Canada, sterilization monitoring is not just a best practice — it is a regulatory requirement. Ensuring that your autoclave is functioning correctly protects patients, staff, and your practice's reputation. At the heart of an effective sterilization monitoring program are biological indicators (BIs).

What Are Biological Indicators?

Biological indicators are the gold standard for sterilization verification. They contain highly resistant bacterial spores — typically Geobacillus stearothermophilus — that are designed to survive sterilization if the process fails. If the spores are killed after a sterilization cycle, you can be confident your autoclave is working correctly.

Types of Biological Indicators

There are two main types used in dental settings:

  • Standard BIs (10–24 hour readout): These are incubated after each cycle and results are read the following day. They are reliable and cost-effective for routine monitoring.
  • Rapid BIs (20-minute readout): These use fluorescence-based technology to deliver results in as little as 20 minutes, allowing clinics to release sterilized instruments the same day without waiting overnight.

How Often Should You Test?

Health Canada and the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) recommend biological indicator testing at least weekly, and with every load containing implantable devices. Many progressive clinics test every load for maximum patient safety.

Choosing the Right BI for Your Clinic

When selecting a biological indicator, consider your clinic's workflow. If you run multiple sterilization cycles per day and need to release instruments quickly, a rapid BI like the Atlas Rapid Biological Indicator with its 20-minute readout is ideal. For clinics with lower volume, a standard 10-hour or 24-hour BI may be sufficient.

Penguin Express offers a full range of biological indicators to suit every clinic's needs — from rapid incubator systems to standard spore test pouches. Contact us to find the right solution for your practice.
